Ryan's Fine Grocer and Delicatessen



UPDATE (7.30.13) Ryan's is now closed due to failure to make rent. This is such sad news to me for I ate there weekly and still crave their food.

UPDATE (5.01.13.): Ryan's now offers brunch from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.


Ryan's is like a museum experience but at a grocery store. And like a museum inspires some to study art and create, Ryan's inspired me to want to cook differently and know more about food.

My newly walking baby came crashing through the doors with me to the media event at Ryan's Fine Grocer and Delicatessen, and I couldn't stop long enough to take a single note before he attempted to pulverize something that looked like an apple and a plum's offspring. But he at least brought my attention to the beautiful produce he was about to destroy.

While I didn't jot down what it all was, I still got to observe and taste as I restrained a kicking one-year-old wild man. I loved everything from the clean atmosphere to the curious tiny mushrooms and the brilliant ham and melted brie sandwich with sweet fig spread from the deli. It's impressive ... very impressive. I really don't think I've ever had a sandwich that good (I haven't even tried the lobster roll covered in yuzu creme fraiche, topped with watercress, tomato, apple-wood smoked bacon and a serrano-avocado aioli. HELLO.)

In the grocery store, items and brands I've never heard of before from far away places nicely juxtapose familiar items like jet-puffed marshmallows and Coca Cola in a glass bottle. I had to walk through twice to take it all in.

What's even cooler is the brother and sister owners, Brittany and Hunter, selected all of this cool stuff themselves (forgive my lack of words). Want to know more about their story? Click here to read the Fort Worth Business Press article about their fascinating family history and resume.


I couldn't be more excited to have this place in Fort Worth. Oh, and it just opened so get in line!

Update: They have added vegan options to their regular menu and brunch menu. I recently tried a new thai vegan sandwich. It had thai "meatballs", fresh jalapeños, cilantro, peanut sauce, julienned carrots and cucumbers, and whatever else that made it so amazing. It was all warmed and served on a fresh baguette. I haven't stopped craving since I had it two weeks ago.

The co-owner, Brittany also said they are going to add more tables to the grocery side of Ryan's and start serving dinner. And yes, they will have full wait staff for this exiting new foodie option.

Piola's and Other Great Fort Worth Patios

Spring is making the transition into summer, and people are looking for a great porch to dine and enjoy the weather. My favorite porch in town is at Piola Italian Restaurant and Garden on the corner of Haskell and Mattison in Fort Worth. The restaurant is inside a little house and tucked in a neighborhood on the west side. It can be hard to find, but is worth the search.  (Click for map) . It's even harder to find a place that has great food and a great patio that's not in a shopping center, which is why we love this place. The atmosphere is great inside and out. We went last weekend and enjoyed every bite of what we ordered.
